PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Musculoskeletal Coding Educator is responsible for development and execution of training and education to Boncura and DuPage Medical Group staff as well as Providers. The Coder actively participates in quality monitoring and provides timely feedback regarding ICD-10, CPT coding and documentation improvement opportunities. The Coder provides specialty specific education for individual staff members and providers within the Musculoskeletal service lines. This role is also involved in onboarding of new providers and assists with annual training.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Education
Develop feedback loop for providers with revenue cycle when there are opportunities for improvement
Onboard, educate and train new MSK providers on coding, billing and documentation practices
Coordinate coding and billing education course for providers & coders-quarterly and annually (CME)
Host Annual MSK coding symposium for providers, billing staff and leadership (Update providers and associates on changes to CPT coding and billing for MSK specialties)
Develop ongoing audits for surgical and non-surgical MSK services-quarterly for new physicians
Revenue Cycle
Work with Epic team to optimize billing workflow and documentation
Work with revenue cycle and providers on appeal/denial letters
Technology
Reviews Epic Upgrades related to Cadence and Prelude and other enterprise computer applications and creates revised departmental documentation when necessary
Evaluate opportunities by MSK specialty for streamlined documentation templates
Troubleshoots system issues as they relate to coding functions and resolves complexities in departmental training workflow
Works with the Alert MD support staff on system updates and creates/coordinates ongoing training to providers and staff as required
Creates and maintains CPT and ICD-10 coding rules and pick lists for MSK providers in Epic
Reporting and Analytics
Assist with coding/billing analytic requests by providers and leadership
Participate in coding/billing dashboard development and reports
Other
Position includes other duties and projects as assigned to support goals and outcomes consistent with department expectations.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
License / Registration / Certification
CPC, CCS-P, RHIT/RHIA
Education
High school diploma plus two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Field of Study
Musculoskeletal specialties (Orthopedics, Spine Surgery, Pain Management, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Podiatry, Neurology, Rheumatology, Physical Therapy)
Experience
3 years minimum EMR experience (Epic preferred)
Minimum of 3 years of experience in MSK-specialty Coding (5+ years preferred)
Experience using Microsoft Office suite
Previous training experience highly preferred
