Summary

To ensure high quality and profitable operation of the division, the Fleet Manager will lead and develop a fleet of Company drivers in a deadline driven, fast paced, ever-changing, and dynamic work environment. The Fleet Manager is responsible to develop strong relationships with their fleet of drivers while achieving performance, training, safety, retention and service needs in accordance with company and department quality, utilization, and profit objectives.

 

Education and Experience

  1. Higher education (i.e. two- or four-year degree) in related area and/or two to three years of training in a related area and/or equivalent experience in a customer driven environment
  2. Experience in the transportation industry preferred but not required.
  3. Management or supervisory experience preferred but not required.
  4. Knowledge of Department of Transportation laws preferred but not required
  5. Experience and ability to read a map.
  6. Experience in developing strong relationships (personal/practical needs) in order to effectively manage, plan, prioritize workload for fleet.
  7. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and internet (databases and research tools)
  8. Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
  9. Strong customer service, time management and math skills with a drive for results who can persevere in the face of resistance or setbacks in a fast paced environment.
  10. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills in order to implement logical conclusions and make well informed quick decisions.
  11. Ability to work independently and self-motivated.
  12. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Driver Management
    1. Develop effective working relationships, from a distance, built on trust and respect.
    2. Train, develop and manage fleet of drivers in support of ATS and departmental goals.
    3. Partner with HR and Safety to accurately and timely report medical concerns and/or leave requests.
    4. Conduct root-cause analysis when a failure occurs to identify solutions to eliminate problem in the future.
    5. Address and effectively resolve performance issues when they occur.
  2. Retention Management
    1. Provide a superior level of service to the fleet of drivers.
    2. Meet/exceed established turnover goal by balancing and managing the driver’s professional and personal needs: home time, active/valid driver credentials, financial satisfaction (account balances, paychecks, average earnings, and advance requests), etc. while meeting ATS expectations.
  3. Service Management
    1. Assumes ownership of the life cycle of each load.
    2. Proactively communicate with internal departments (planners, CSRs, safety, sales, etc.) the status of loads and any issues that may impact the overall relationship with the driver and ATS.
    3. Effective management for optimum performance; ensure the driver arrives with the correct tools and equipment to haul the load, has sufficient log hours to meet load windows and proactively manage driver ETAs and PTAs.
    4. Problem solve and trouble shoot loading and unload, utilizing available resources to manage load requirements; OD regulations, border regulations, port rules, customer specific driver qualifications, etc.
  4. Safety Management
    1. Lead, influence, and educate fleet on ATS Safety Culture to meet and/or exceed established Safety expectations.
      1. Minimize accidents, moving violations and citations.
      2. Log hour compliance.
  • Complete monthly random drug and alcohol tests.
  1. Complete Annual in Person visits.
  2. Complete monthly safety training tests.
  3. CSA compliance.
  • Monitor driver performance daily and provide feedback
  • Coach daily on LYTX events
  1. Proactively identify safety hazards within the fleet.
  2. Organize, conduct and lead Safety Assessments.
  1. Production Management
    1. Work with company planner to ensure load selection supports and aligns with production management and retention management objectives.   
    2. Respect driver’s time by making sure their time at work is effectively utilized.
    3. Coordinate driver directional requests when appropriate.
    4. Coordinate mandates with driver within established timeframes.
    5. Effectively use the logistics broker board to maximize productivity.
    6. Manage down time while maintaining productivity.
    7. Log hour management and trip planning.
  2. Accountable to effectively manage cost related to:
    1. Damage, abuse, neglect
    2. Fuel
    3. Out of route
    4. Miscellaneous and Securement Equipment
    5. Layovers
    6. Miscellaneous pay
    7. Citations

  4. Position may require work responsibilities outside of normal business hours, and infrequent travel may be required.
